The New Plant Mom’s Guide: 6 Stress Free House Plants For Beginners

Sourced from Refined Ambiance

We took the dive into being #plantparents about two years ago. Boy has it been a journey! We started off with “Iris” pictured above. Iris is a Bird of Paradise that we purchased from Walmart. We did well with Iris for about a year, then we purchased two more Bird of Paradise Plants. We chose to name them Jimmy and Virginia. I have no clue where Jimmy came from. Virginia is Tiffany’s grandmother. Needless to say Iris’ siblings haven’t had the best journey. Jimmy did not make it and Virginia is holding on for dear life!

So if you are ready to take the dive into being a plant parent but don’t want too much maintenance, this list below is for you!

1. Cast Iron Plant

The Cast Iron Plant is a very solid plant. The only risk are them being over-watered or re-planing too often. They take awhile to grow, but they are also very hard to kill. PSA: Just wipe the dust off its leaves with a damp cloth once a week to keep it well maintained.

2. Parlor Palm

These are super gorgeous plants that are excellent for dining or living rooms and take moderate care. They thrive well in medium, indirect light and can even do well in artificial light. PSA: Don’t water unless the soil is dry – otherwise you risk killing it.

3. Snake Plant

I think this is the one we need in our bedroom! You can grab one of these for your home if you’re looking for incredible style without all the maintenance! Also known as “Mother-in-law’s Tongue,” the Snake Plant is an extremely durable indoor plant. PSA: Most only need watering once a month and it can go weeks with neglect while still standing tall and firm.

4. Elephant’s Ear

A native of the Philippines, the Elephant Ear is probably my most favorite to look at. Its stunning purely because of it’s unusual style. I see myself purchasing this one in the future. PSA: The leaves can burn easily, so its best to keep it in a shady spot of your home.

5. The Money Plant

The Money Plant (also known as “Devil’s Ivy”). I remember my parents having these when I was a child. They’re a great beginning plant for anyone starting out on the plant parent journey. The name Devil’s Ivy came from it’s ability to “choke out” other plants in nature and grow vines even in the worst conditions. PSA: They’re best in a hanging pot or potted on a desk.

6. The Peace Lily

This is a plant that exudes oozes peace and quiet. It is truly a beautiful house plant. The white flowers serve as lighten your mood on dark days. This plant also doesn’t need much sunlight. If your home doesn’t have alot of natural light, the peace lily won’t mind at all. PSA: To keep it healthy, the peace lily does require regular watering.
