A question I get asked often is “Should I mix metals?” and “How do you mix metals?”

Over the years, I have had these same questions. However, about two years ago, I discovered that you can mix metals! Silver & Gold. Copper & Silver. Rose Gold & Silver. They all work and work well together.

So today, I am breaking down how to go about mixing metals throughout your home.

Tip 1: Determine your color scheme. Your color palette should be a factor when choosing your finishes. Gold can go with just about any color. Whereas silver is best for neutral colors, such as black, gray or white. Silver also complements jewel tones, such as medium blue, sea green, cherry red, emerald green, purple and turquoise.

Tip 2: Select a dominant finish. Chose one finish and select another finish to compliment it. A good example is in the picture below. Silver is the dominant finish and gold is the accent.

Tip 3: Distribute Your Metals. To create the right balance spread out the metals evenly throughout the space. Also take note of where they lie visually. For example the image below the mirrors are on the same level so they are one color. The same for the faucets.

Tip 4: Less is more! Keep is simple. Mixing 2 metals works out great for small to medium sized spaces. You can get away with a third metal in larger spaces. The space below could do a mixture of 3 metals due to its size.

Tip 5: When in doubt, black it out! Black goes with any metal. If you are concerned with what color to add to a mixed metal room go with black. A great example of this is below.
