Sofa vs Sectional: How To Pick The Best Seat For Your Home

Sectional vs sofa? It’s a valid question when planning your interior decor or design. It totally makes sense since if it’s one of the first things you set your mind on when buying furniture for a new home, or even when you’re just moving into a new living arrangements.

It’s also the focal point in the living room that will dictate the rest of your space, so you want to make sure you choose the best option that works for how you want to use the space and how you live. Whether you end up choosing a sectional or sofa, its important to choose wisely and early on in the process.

Ok so, key questions to ask yourself when deciding between a sectional or sofa are:

  • Do you have a family or live alone?
  • What’s your daily life like in your home?
  • Are you pressed for space?
  • Does your space have an eccentric layout or shape?
  • Is your living area multi-functional serving as a dining or office space?
  • Are you a big entertainer or more of a casual lounger?

The answers to these questions vary depending on the person. For me personally, my answers always lead me to a sectional. I have a family, tons of space, and I am a big entertainer and casual lounger. For those reasons, I choose sectional 9 times out of 10.

Four Key Things To Consider

  1. Comfort-For laying out in front of the TV, there’s nothing better than a sectional. Most sectionals allow enough room for two people to completely lay down and chat it up. You could go the route of a reclining sofa for maximum leisure, but if you want to get totally horizontal, the sectional is the way to go.
  2. Flexibility-Your standard size sofa offers greater decorating flexibility, both in terms of furniture arrangement and fabric. A couch can be accented with side chairs and other pieces that complement it without having a ton of upholstery that is exactly the same. Sectionals, on the other hand, are a whole lot of the same fabric. Additionally, an individual sofa can usually be repositioned in many ways within the same room. Sectionals often work in only one configuration based on your choice of left or right facing. If you like to frequently rearrange your furniture a sectional is not the best choice.
  3. Price-When considering the price, there’s no clear winner in this battle. Sectional fans say they offer the best value because it would take three pieces of standard furniture to replace one sectional. It’s tempting to assume that means you’re getting a three-for-one deal. Proponents of a sofa would say you won’t be locked into buying all that furniture at once, so you can budget out your purchases to avoid breaking the bank. By buying only exactly the furniture you need, you don’t pay for unnecessary items that drive up the cost. In my opinion price depends almost entirely on quality. A leather couch with all the bells and whistles can run around the same price as a decent fabric sectional. So long as you know what upholstery you prefer and how many people you need to seat regularly, you can find a sectional or a sofa well within your budget.
  4. Room Size-Looking for the best fit for a smaller room or an apartment? In truth, the best option depends on the shape of the small room. Certain walls that have cut-ins or odd corners naturally lend themselves to a sectional. If the room has a lot of doorways and windows to work around, a couch is probably the best option.
